AMMC and Mid-America Transplant Services Host Donor Drive

Drive March 22, 2011

Arkansas Methodist Medical Center is sponsoring a donor drive in partnership with Mid-America Transplant Services on Tuesday, April 26 2011 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in The Herget Atrium at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.

For 35 years, Mid-America Transplant Services (MTS) has served as the regional organ and tissue procurement organization for eastern Missouri, southern Illinois and northeast Arkansas. MTS’s primary service offering is to facilitate and coordinate the organ and tissue donation process.

At this event, people will be able to add their name to the state donor registry. This means that individuals will be able to make a permanent decision about donation by putting their name on the registry or what is known as First Person Consent. Arkansas and Missouri are both First Person Consent states which means once the organ donor status is placed on a driver’s license, no one can change that status (except for the individual).

By signing up for the registry, a person is stating their desire to become an organ and tissue donor prior to their death. If a person dies without their wishes known, then Mid-America Transplant Services has to approach their legal next-of-kin and offer the option of donation. April is National Donate Life Month and was instituted by Donate Life America and its members in 2003, and grew out of the federally proclaimed National Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Awareness Week (NOTDAW). NDLM features an entire month of local, regional and national activities to help encourage Americans to become a donor.
