AMMC and the American Red Cross Host Blood Drive

Shay Nanke July 14, 2011

Arkansas Methodist Medical Center and the American Red Cross are hosting a blood drive Thursday, August 4, 2011 from 12:00 pm-5:30 pm in the auditorium in the Professional Office Building at AMMMC located at 900 W. Kingshighway. As of Monday, July 11, 2011, the American Red Cross is in an appeal for blood donors in order to address a critical shortage across the nation. Many donors are busy or traveling, school is out of session and donations have dropped dramatically. According to Red Cross’ National Headquarters, in May and June, while demand for blood products remained steady, donations were at the lowest level the Red Cross has seen in more than a dozen years. Because of that, the Red Cross needs blood donors now more than ever. All blood types are needed, but especially O negative, which can be used to treat any patient. At Arkansas Methodist Medical Center alone, approximately 100 units are transfused monthly.

To give blood for transfusion to another person, you must be healthy, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old if allowed by state law (includes Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee). You must weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated whole blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days) or double red cells in the last 16 weeks (112 days). "Healthy" means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, "healthy" also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control. Each person who successfully donates blood at the August blood drive at Arkansas Methodist will receive three $5.00 coupons to be used at AMMC’s Auxiliary Gift Shop, Beacon’s Deli, Cafeteria or The Foundation Station.
