AMMC's Patten Earns Masters Degree and Licensure

Shay Willis January 14, 2013

Arkansas Methodist Medical Center Director of Social Services Robin Patten recently completed her Masters Degree in Social Work from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. She also earned her licensure as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). The Social Work Licensing Act states, "Since the profession of social work significantly affects the lives of the people in this state, it is the purpose of this chapter to protect the public by setting standards of qualification, training and experience for those who seek to represent themselves to the public as social workers and by promoting high standards of professional performance for those engaged in the practice of social work."

Having her licensure means Patten has gained the knowledge and skills to perform counseling and that she has an ethical duty to uphold per the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) standards of ethics. For the patients of Arkansas Methodist, it provides the opportunity to receive a higher level of social work practice and expertise including but not limited to the counseling of individuals, couples, families and groups for purposes of assessment and enhancement of problem-solving and coping skills.

Patten has also been named as the Northeast Representative for the Arkansas Chapter of the NASW. The mission of the NASW is to support, promote and advocate for social justice, social work practice and the social work profession to enhance the effective functioning and well being of individuals, families and communities.

Her duties as a member of the NASW board include representing the needs of the social work community in Arkansas as a whole, within the board’s functions and responsibilities to that community; represent NASW at community events including organizations with private individuals and professional colleagues. As a branch representative, Patten will be responsible for stimulating and coordinating local branch activities which include regular branch membership meetings.
